Mr. Galloway Featured In Sports Illustrated

Mr. Galloway

The most constant male authority figure for many of his athletes, Galloway, 54, will end one of the most successful high school coaching tenures in Pennsylvania when he retires after the May 25 state meet. He already has 14 girls' and two boys' state team track championships, and his girls' team could contend at the state meet again this year.

Your deep affection and admiration for this man is highly commendable.

I never had the pleasure of meeting this fine man, but reading your post made me realize he was a great man first and then a great coach and mentor. I am sure he will be missed by many, but loved by all.

For me to be a member of his Team....I'll tell you what this man meant in my Life.....

He "Was" and "Is" An Inspiration that I apply Personally in My Life ...My Business ...And His ADVICE I Give to My Kids Daily .....

"No Excuses" ...

P.E.R.I.O.D. !!!

He was my 7th Grade English Teacher back in 1977....as Well as My Track & FootBall Coach...

As a Member of His Track Team I was a Sprinter and Long Jumper.......As my Track Coach he led me, along with Mr. Webster, to 3 State Track & Field Team Championship Meets at Shippensburg, PA ....
(81', 82', & 83)...

We won Two Boys State Team Championships (81 & 82).....

He inspired me to Win

~ 2 Personal State Championship Titles (1982 & 83)
~ 3 Personal District Championship Titles in Track & Field as a Long Jumper (1981, 82, 83)
..... not to mention 2 consecutive Year Personal Undefeated Seasons in Track & Field in the regular season...All Invitations, District & States Championships in 82'&83'........He Led me to so many Gold, Silver & bronze Metals in various Sprinter Relays & Jumping events that I can't even remember.....

Without Question He is a Man who I respect to the Highest Degree as a coach ...a Mentor ...and Friend....

Yet To those who "knew" and "know" him well....without question he "was" and "Is" Much More Than a Coach..... His Values That He instilled in me early in my life I still carry with me to this very day.

Yes.....30 years later ! .....

"Never...Never Make Excuses" .... "Take Full Responsibility For Your Actions" ...

It's Funny that I look back at this now....but I can remember back in 1977 when I was in his English Class....I was 12 years old at the time....

One Afternoon in His English class ...That Dreaded Phone Rang.....I got called out his class in Catherine Hall to get a Hair Cut from the "Barbers" ~~ Better Known with the "Brothers" at the time as ~~~ AKA ~~~ " The Local Campus Butchers " ......

When I came back into his Class with tears in my eyes after their version of a Barber's Lobotomy ....sporting some soft of "Bootlegged" - Loop~Sided "High Top Fade" ... .... he was like ...

"Oh Know" ... "Hell No" !

Now Keep in Mind...this is 1977... ..... "High Top Fades" weren't even in style at that time until 1985 with the Beginning of " Will Smith " ~ " Fresh Prince" era ....

so believe me...those "Meal Bus Driving" .. "Part~Time Wanna-Be Barbers" were 5 years ahead of their time ...And no Doubt ..I'm sure they were Practicing their form of " Art " with No License !!!!! LOL !

I guess Galloway kind~of took it Personal...cuz .... we all know that back then Mr. Galloway Kept a Decent Afro.... I mean A Perfectly "Round" "Fro" .......
Without Question... Jackson 5 Style ~ Smiling

So when he saw their results..... He immediately Jumped up from his desk and Marched me down to Mr. Whitman's Office (the Principle at that time) and demanded that Mr. Whitman call the Barbers down to Explain Their "MichelangeloListic Sculpture" sitting on top of my Scalp ....

I just remember him saying to the Barbers while Pointing to my Fro......"C'mon Man" ..."There's No Excuse For this Crap" !!!!

Yeah.... No Question....

When I'm Faced With Life's Difficulties..... Life's Many Challenges ... His Words Ring Ever~So~Loudly in my Ears...

"No Excuses" ............ "No Excuses"

Yes..... In Life ...Ya Gotta Make It Happen !

I'm A Milt For Life.... and I'm A Member of His Team Forever.....

I remember that day and I remember those emotions! Real life is better than a movie. You don't need to buy self-help books filled with platitudes, when you have experienced true respect, inspiration or that voice that would distinquish itself out of the thousands cheering!

Even today, I hear Galloway's voice in my head before leading a big meeting or some public speaking. The nervousness leaves me at that deep breath before "getting into the blocks"

If others were so lucky

I have nothing but love for Galloway. Here's a short but true story. In the Spring of 1988 right before the Mid-Penn Conference Championships I think. I gave Galloway my Acropolis at Track practice and he took it and wrote a few words and then closed it. He told me "read this when you get home". After practice I read what it said and ... well I can't remember it all but it was adressed to "Champ". I laughed out loud but I smiled because of the confidence he had in me. I guess it also didn't hurt that I hadn't lost an 800 race to that point either. Anyways,,, I kept thinking about that word as I won the conference, then districts ... I was beside myself and nervous as heck thinking about States. I would dream about winning the 800... It was a hot day in Shippensburg in May and I was sweating freely as the officials jogged us slowly up the straight-away to the start. Trina Pool was screaming at me and smiling and I felt like a horse must feel before the kentucky derby... loose, ALIVE and Ready! I looked up into the stands for Galloway, my late mother Monzella and my sister Sheri (class of '85) but couldn't find a soul! We got to the line and I was standing there waiting for the gun...I don't think I have EVER felt so Alive and Crazy Mad Calm at the same time... in my head I had run that race a 1000 times before..and won it. The last thing I remember was "Galloway will KILL me if I lose this race!" The next thing I know I had 200 meters to go and I had to go run this guy down... the crowd went WILD and I passed him with about 100 meters to go ... I crossed the line, threw my hands in the air and looked into the crowd as guys were still crossing the line! ... There was Galloway with that camera of his... I cried man... I cried and couldn't stop.... mierda I'm crying right now. That dude is special ... Washington, DC and I think he KNOWS it!!! (I am laughing and crying now) ... Big Ups to Galloway baby! Bob Carr (1988) was right... Track was fun as all get out...and it was even more fun that same day when me, Bob Carr, Shell, and Agoi beat a certain mile-relay team for the State Gold from Wilkes-Barre. I will give you a little hint who their lead off and final leg were: they were both professional football players...yup you guessed it: Rocket and his brother Quadry Ismail. I dusted Rocket on the leadoff and Shell and Agoi gave Bob such a big lead that Bob absolutely cruised and dusted his Quadry on the final leg... Talk about a sweet vic for the Milts! Those guys went on to PRO football careers and the humble Milt boys dusted 'em! You did alright that day Galloway... me, matt marvin, agoi and Shell took the 2 mile and the mile relay and our the boys and girls won the team championship ... what a day! .........

I don't think it would be the same Campbell, because the one I know was super nice, and he was a good Christian man. Of course maybe he became that way after his wife turned him "softer and gentler" like we wives are known to do. The Ken Campbell I am thinking of is still in the Hershey area.

Could your coach Ken Campbell be the one who married Ethel Campbell, (also a former teacher at the Milt)? She was a great Language Arts teacher and I know that their son Scott was a football star at Purdue and then for the Steelers (short lived). Hmmmm....

we had a coach at MHS for 1 year. Ken Campbell. He was a former NY Titan, before they were the Jets. His favorite statement was, "You must always be agile, mobile and hostile". I always loved that saying and still us it today.

Surely anyone who had Mr. Galloway in 8th grade remembers that poem..... I still recite it to this day when my co-workers try to feed me a line of bull....

"Excuses"
Excuses are tools of incompetence that build monuments to nothing
& those who usually specialize in them are seldom good at anything else...
Excuses, excuses, excuses....

Does anyone remember vomiting after the first track practice of the year? Coach Galloway would push you to be your best. He would brake you down just so that he could easily pick you up. I learned so much from Coach Galloway, Coach Webster, Coach Hope. It was hard work, but very enjoyable at the same time.

Of all the athletic teams I was a part of during my time at Milton Hershey, Track and Field was by far my favorite.
CO-ED......Do I have to say anymore. Anybody who remembers the bus trips to away meets will understand. LOL

Thanks Coach!

What a tribute to an incredible coach, teacher and role model. I never had the opportunity to have coach Galloway in the classroom... but I did run on the teams that won his first two boys state championships - 1981 & 1982. He really was one of the most inspiring people I'd ever encountered. He made you believe and know that you were capable of accomplishing anything that you worked hard for. His mantra then was, "No deposit, no return". He actually had a t-shirt printed that he would wear to practice. There are so many memories I have from his coaching that I've shared with my kids as they went through high school athletics. One I'll never forget was when he had me run the 440, (eventually converted to the 400M) in an exhibition against Hershey High School. My time would have been good enough to take second in the starting line-up, so that and the mile relay was the event I ran my soph thru senior year. If anybody used to run the 400M... you'll know that in the final 50 meters, it feels like your legs turn to rubber. Coach Galloway used to call it "Riggie", (because it feels like rigamortis has set in your legs toward the end of the race). He used to say that Riggie lived behind the high jump pit; so when you made the last turn in the final stretch, Riggie would jump on your back and "beat you about the head". I can still hear him yelling.... "Here comes Riggie......!!" My son had run the 400M when he was in school and when I told him the story we laughed so hard because of the shared memory.... Thanks Leroy! You were the best!

I remember him mostly as my 7th or 8th grade English teacher. I was always a good speller and wanted to be at the top of the list for perfect spelling tests!! LOL.. Even though I was in the top 5 always, I never did get that top spot. Oh well... He was a great teacher and would give me that look from time to time, but I think he would say I wasn't a bad student at all overall. Glad to see he has had so much success there at MHS throughout the years and hope to see him again this fall. Good stuff...
