Milt Food
It has gotten awful quiet around here. I figured I would start a new topic on the best or worst of the Milt food.
When I was there I definately hated the Potato Soup. It would make me gag!!
I loved the big tin of cookies. We would put slices of bread in the tin and it would make the cookies soft and delicious.
I love MRE's !!!!!!!!! MMMMM MRE’s
I have 4 cases in the basement for when the bottom falls out of this economy.
I would rather spend 24 hrs in the Pit at 3rd Btln H Company, PI , than eat liver.
I don’t know what it is, I just can’t eat it.
I tried once, 20 years later, I had to excuse my self to go to the restroom and wash my mouth out.
The Milt really should have sent something along with it to drown it in, oh, that’s right, they did.
Pepper slaw. uuugggghhhhh
(I hated the Brussel Sprouts also)
the big bad Marine cant eat liver and onions, come on MRE's out Liver and Onions to shame.
your are starting to sound like a coastie,

the horrible brussel sprouts that was ALWAYS served with them
I couldn’t eat liver and onions, every time it came in, I went to the milk cooler, reached on top, got the paddle down and received my three swats.
I was there from 3rd grade on, I received a lot of swats over liver and onions......
Liver and onions for sure.....I can't even type that without choking ;-)
Was greatful I was born when I was got to spend at least that at home w/ the family and my friends. Though the sheet cakes were good sometimes have 'em for *gasp* 2 or 3 days in the units I was in.
You gotta be there to get it!
You snooze, you lose.
(or in your case, vacation)
In 7 years I never had one...my b/day is 12/26 so I was always on Christmas vacation.
While I enjoyed every birthday cake except one, allow me to explain
I arrived at Milton Hershey in July and my birthday is in August. I was so excited to get a cake from the school for my birthday, and then I realized it was a stinkin' carrot cake!!!
Now, today I love me some carrot cake, but turning ten at the time, carrot cake was NOT my kind of cake. Why couldn't they just make me a simple ol chocolate cake, for Pete's sake?!
you know not until 6 grade did MHS stop sending one 8 to 9 inch two layers round cake. and that was cut into 14,15 or 16 pieces unless houseparents wanted some then it was cut into more.... when they went to the 1/4 then 1/2 sheet cakes it was heaven - actually got 2 peices off that first 1/2 cake and they weren't small slivvers.
so yea the B-cakes you guys know were good, but to us that had they other ones, it was really a great improvement......
and stewed tomatoes are so nasty.
I loved the birthday cakes.
When I was there, for desert we sometimes had egg custard pie...I don't know why we had to eat it...it was desert after all. I always liked the chile-mac though.
They are great. Here in the South Jersey/Philly area they also have Panzarotties, they are small Calzones.
unc
in a manner of speaking...
girl know exactly what you mean.... my best sujestion is find yourself a nice greek resturant, they sometimes are the closest... you might be surprised..... down here they have a mexican resturant that makes a cheese steak burrito (texture is all wrong) and by the time i order it with all the trimmings the taste is right on.... but still not the same, .... why greek - calzones i think they are called - close to a strombia in look but taste just like pizza in flavor - but watch the carbs they can get away from you....
don't know how small of a town you live in, but its hard to find a good pizza in any of the major cities in the South...
Just thinking about a McScrapple Sandwich makes me McDisgusted. My mom loves it. Even though we live in Tennessee we have several Mennonite communities and a couple Amish bakeries but she says it just isn't as good. I'll just take her word for it. There are two things I really miss, one of them is Philly Cheese Steak and PIZZA!! The pizza is definitely NOT the same. There are ads everywhere--Chicago Style Pizza!! It's crappy. They don't know what pizza is supposed to be like down here.
Meredith
Scrapple needs applesauce to be the best! YUM!
Cuz I
red beet pickled eggs (we just call them pickled eggs). They're the best!!!!! Send me some recipes Amy and Lewis!!! I'm craving them now, thanks alot!
The only way to eat scrapple is with SYRUP!!!!! Hot sauce is for French Fries and Eggs.
Tree88
you're totally correct it is deviled red beet eggs but the Hinkle/Schweitzer women had heavy hands and like their vinegar but then the eggy/yolky part was all sweet (weird combo) but oh soooo good.
#1 thing I miss beyond my g/moms pot pie are her pickled deviled eggs. MMMM
Keoni, if you need it I have my grandmother's cookbook (nearly all handwritten) if you dont have recipes.
Just an offer.
pickled deviled eggs?!?!?!? That does sound like something our family would
but I have never heard of them. We have an AWESOME deviled egg recipe, as well as the fact that my husband makes the best pickled red beet eggs!!!!! They make ya pucker!!!!!!
Your grandparents had a cold cellar too? I cant say that the attempts at Dutch food at the Milt were inspiring as you have just said ~ it was alright but lacked that old school human touch.

My grandfather was Pa. Dutch and made his own chow chow. I remember as kids, before we went to the Milt, every time we would visit him, my brother Joe would say, "Grandpop! Let's go down the cellar and get some chow chow!" So, with a Dutch mom, it was instilled in us early to gravitate towards Dutch food. The Milt only helped the process along.
so long as it is vinegar based ONLY!!!!! If there is sugar added, I WILL NOT touch it!!!!
(My husband loves it when that happens!)
But only registered members can access your profile, to strangers you are just Steve.
..and sometimes I get a yearning for pepper cabbage too. Interesting story-

Why you and Clint are within a stone's throw of each other! Y'all must only live one holler apart!
shoot, you can google my name and get it just as easy..... my address, my mom's, sisters, the pope's, elvis's. the internet ended all secrets....
Please tell me that's not your real address.
I get it now. It's a Jersey thang. You can actually buy it online for only $10.95 shipping
LINK I am going to keep my eyes open for it and purchase it if I find it. The site has peoples stories/memories associated with Taylor ham/pork rolls. It's so funny how we associate so many good times with food. Somebody please pass me a Portillo's hotdog or a White Castle burger.
you should be able to get it in your local grocery store. Put it in a frying pan, brown it a little bit on each side and send it UPS to 8899 barney rubble lane, farmville. va 55525
yeah Murf it is, but obviously it is good anytime and Taylor is just a brand but there are a few companies that make it. As you can see Taylor is the best but is not sold everywhere
What is a Taylor pork roll? Is it breakfast sausage? I think I am going to have to try it.
only difference though....you can get it every day...
NO ONE sells it here.
Taylor pork roll on a kaiser roll with cheese now that is good
me some pork roll
When I go home. Oh and a real bagle and pizza too. Not very good out here.
And the ingredients aren't nearly as bad as regular scrapple!!!!!!
Turkey stock
Turkey skins
Turkey hearts
Turkey livers
Whole wheat flour
Turkey
Corn meal
Onions
Salt
Gelatin
Spices
2 oz. serving is:
110 calories
7g of fat
45 mg. of cholesterol
310 mg sodium
7 g carbs (notice they are whole grain carbs so it's all good!)
6g Protein
10% of your daily intake of Iron
25% of your daily intake of Vitamin A
So not only is it YUMMY, but it's not bad for you eitherl!!!!!
And eating syrup on any meat is just WRONG on so many different levels!!! Ketchup is for french fries!!!!
Real scrapple lovers eat their scrapple with a few dashes of hot sauce!!!!!
cares where it came from as long as it tastes good....MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM SSSSSCCCCRRRRAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPLLLLEEEEE!!
The company I used to work for took managers and their spouses on a yearly cruise. I had never tried escargo up to that point, but once I did, man I could eat it nonstop. Now, I will eat almost anything, just ask my wife.
but I get taylor pork roll also!!!!!!!
whenever i make a trip back to pa, right now about 2 times a year, there is always 4 foods i make sure i get before coming back to SC.. (mainly because i can't find them down here)
1. philly cheese steak (a real one with everything)
2. Tasty Cakes (at least one box for the trip home, if luckly might have 1 pack left by the time we get home.)
3. Philly soft pretzel (a dozen between the time we get there and before we start home)
4. Scrapple and pancakes for breakfast (heavy on the syrup for both, and if i could it would be for every breakfast while there, wife and kids will not touch it)
But, i do understand the worst / dislike of scrapple, my wife doesn't even want to go to the resturant if she knows i am going to order it, kind of makes her want to
. Has more to do with the texture of it - and the knowing of whats in it.... then the taste.
Sorry if the same happends to some of you when thinking about it...
but must totally agree with sue here, I really like it.
Can I have a McScrapple with haggis fries and large buttermilk please.....
if Mcd's makes a mcscrapple sandwich, I'm selling my stock.....
other worst food, MHS goulash (my daugters new word instead of crap - what a load of goulash), Haggis just off the top of my head.
I don't know when you had them last from there but... a REAL cheese-steak is in a soft roll with slightly crusty outside. Not pizza dough rolled out and shaped like a roll.
agree, but not talking about the bread as much as the meat mix and spices, also on 322 in palmyra, i think is called antonio's does it with the right bread -
Wil as far as cheese, Provo, american, mozzerella mix - not much for the wiz - and with onions, mushrooms, and sometime peppers - but never with spaghetti / marinara sauce...
every fast food only use one type, but it the mix of cheese that gives it the Philly taste.
YourPlace in hershey (wonder if it still there), love there Stromboli - but never tried a cheese steak from there...
and the mcscapple great idea....
I think the area In Ohio I live in is usually a test market area for a lot of the fast food chains. So hopefully if it ever becomes a real McIdea We will get to try it first. Although being second in the country wouldn't be bad either. Just as long as they don't put ketchup on it. Why do they like to over do the ketchup on sandwiches anyhow?
You guys are cracking me up! Murph - I
the whole McScrapple sandwich idea!
I actually love scrapple too but haven't touched it since I found out how it's made and exactly what's in it. But man, I miss it though. Especially with lots of syrup like Sue said originally. Yummy! Of course I won't eat meat off of the bone, so I'm just a weirdo now I guess.
Tree88
I think i'm going to be sick
I would eat Kimschee or Balute before I touch scrapple.....
I
scrapple too, nice stack of pancakes and scrapple and lots of butter and syrup yummmmmmmm
I have eaten food in other countries that dosn't even come close to the nastiness of scrapple.
if Mcd's makes a mcscrapple sandwich, I'm selling my stock.....
get my wife to have scrapple. I love it as well. I will have to sneak some in....
scrapple is nasty.... nasty mc nasty... nasty mc.. scrapply nasty scrapple.
I mean
I like that idea, I to am a fan of scrapple and being from Philly I dont think you could not like it.
I
scrapple. I am waiting for McDonalds to introduce the Scrapple-Egg&Cheese McGriddle breakfast sandwich, I think there is a market for it here in Lancaster County. Just remember you heard it here first.
the other food items I'm all for, but scapple, Jack you really need to talk :-P
you mean they don't have swiss cheese, onion and green pepper?
I think I have been in California too long
Scrapple is the most discusting substance ever invented by human beings.. I think that they should use it as a last meal for the prison system, it would be classsified as cruel and inhuman punishment.
the other food items I'm all for, but scapple, Jack you really need to talk

i remember my 8th grade year The Cooks were my house parents. She fried the liver with bacon and onions and always cut the liver into bite size pieces. OMG there was never enough ketchup to cover up that horrible taste
