Jesse Helms
Considering the conservative bent of this site I am somewhat surprised that there has been no mention of the passing of Senator Jesse Helms, that paragon of right-wing values. His racist, homophobic attitudes, and the fear and hate he spewed made him a role model for the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity; but he at least had the guts to be open about his reactionary views.
Oh well, consider this small piece a memorial to the old knuckle dragger.
to die on the 4th of july.
while he is on his slow roast, he can ask strom about the whole essie mae thing.
and this part:
but he at least had the guts to be open about his reactionary views
is why a lot of people who hated him respected him. see also: large numbers of black people moving to the south. i'll take the racist neighbor for 200, alex. at least i know where i stand with him, and he'll still watch my house anyway when i'm on vacation because i must be somewhat okay if i can afford to live in this neighborhood. [isn't that how it goes?]
What? The goose isn't fit for the gander...you know how them there conservatives can be rant and complain about "liberals" but if someone comes at them even in jest they get their feathers ruffled
I expressed dismay that there was no mention of the late Senator PRIOR to my posting a message.
As far as your reaction, perhaps the truth hurts, or at least makes one uncomfortable. What makes my comment undignified? Is it the fact that the old coot is dead? I would have happily said the same thing to his face while he was alive, so where is the problem?
Perhaps no one else said anything, because they didn't want to dignify your comments with a response.
...I thought there would be at least one subscriber who would have plenty of good things to say.
People go by the old saying. "My mother told me to only speak good of the dead."

OK, a LOT late on this topic. Living in NC, I hear that JH did some good for this state. However, I hate every Spring and Fall when I have to go to an advisory board meeting for the community college. You see, they have their meeting at the Jesse Helms Center or, as I like to call it, The Jesse Helms Center for the Promotion of Racism and the Advancement of Redneck Society. I don't think he is missed very much as far as I can tell. Now if we can just get Elizabeth Dole out of office!!
