How do you feel now that you have been gone a few years
I just want to know if anyone feels like they miss the life at MHS? Trufully I have been gone almost 40 years and I can say that even tho we did not agree back then there are times I wish I could relive my high school years at MHS. Yes we all know that the work was nerve racking, that sometimes we would ask ourselves why am I doing this. But take a look at what was transformed from then and now productive members of society that all work hard support their families and have a sullen peace of mind knowing that in school they got the needed traing to succeed. Yes I do miss the good times being a truck driver for over 37 years made me wake up real quick. I always told myself that I would not need geography, math ,science. Ok I was wrong yes I had to know weight displacement ,fractions, distances, incorporate everything I know into one big headache a truck driver. I retired from UPS freight(formerly Overnite Transportation) after 23 years of service. I have been from Toronto to the end of Florida Across the United States and Back to the east coast. But most of all I can thank Milton Hershey School for giving me the training to succeed. Our lives are like leaves in the wind flowing thru the air with intent and purpose. As we did when we were in school. Yes I do still think today at 57 years old I got the chance to succeed and I took it.So my memories will not be mixed but fond ones of where I called home from 1964 to 1972. I can only wish you younger alumni the same blessing to succeed as so many before you have done. Yes times are tough but you will make it thru just have and attitude that you were givin I can do this. Best to any and all alumni and framily and friends that read this. George L. Campbell MHS Class of 1972
I love the megaphone...makes those of us with Varsity status feel special...tee hee.
thanks Murph
and so it is.
Maybe I should have a megaphone under my name.
Can I have a megaphone under my name too???
Cool.
Maybe I should have a megaphone under my name.
First of all yes, there is a varsity cheer status on here...and Chris you ARE there!!! I'm officially calling that one! Bill, I think you qualify too.
I'm still trying to get to the Varsity cheerleader status.
That is a status? Funny looking back that I was a cheerleader for a half a football season. I quit so I could spend time at the game with my girlfriend.
We need more people to come back and stay.
I'm still trying to get to the Varsity cheerleader status.
It's so nice to be missed. I do come around the site more and more frequently. I've missed it.
Actually, if you look at the history disciplinary issues aren't mostly caused by boy-girl situations. When they put all boys no matter what age together it became a rape haven for the older boys to sodamize the younger ones....you can't blame that on us girls. I think adding girls rounded it out and made it more socially enriching because we are there due to family/homelife issues and in a "normal" household you would go to school with girls and boys alike. Masculinity doesn't come by having all guys but by teaching young boys to be great men and conduct themselves accordingly.
I'm sorry you seem so bitter. And as we grow up we learn how to deal and accept peoples differences. I am friends with alot of people that I never hung out with or sometimes didn't even get along with in school.
now stepping off my
your sunny disposition has been sorely missed.
I too would have rather been in the barn rather than having a house chore. I'd even scrape the lot on a rainy day rather than dust, vacuum or do the dishes.
Goodness is returning to the school. Traditions are continuing...or returning. With the exception of barn, which this GIRL had the "joy" of doing. I am one thankful girl, who owes her life to the school. I think the school had an opportunity to change many more lives by allowing girls, and I am so glad they did.
I agree with Chris, people grow up and I'm pretty sure that the same people who were bullies are better people today...at least I hope that's the case.
I am also sorry that you are out of work. Keep your chin up, and keep a positive attitude, things will turn around for you. Best of luck!
I can live with that, BUT I still the school was emasculated by girl enrollment.
I can live with that, BUT I still the school was emasculated by girl enrollment. If I want to reconnect with old classmates, I get on facebook, or some other method. I haven't had a meaningful job in over 2 years, so I can't afford to leave my driveway. Even if I could, I wouldn't go because I'm sure that the same bullies and those who thought their s**t didn't stink will be there.
those bullies have changed, everybody takes time to grow up.
I am sorry to hear about the job situation....it's scary. We get older, have lots of knowledge and experience but employers hire the young kids. Doesn't seem right.
I also agree with 2 of the 3 points. Of course not the girl part. I don't see how enrolling girls caused a discipline problem. Believe me, with todays young people it could be all boys and they would still be having discipline problems. Respect for authority is not popular. Just take a look at some of the Disney and Nick shows on TV. They don't promote outright disrespect for authority, but you will notice that many of the shows directed at preteens and teenagers have no parents. Thus the kids are making their own decisions. Just a little observation.
I recently went back to the school after about 20yrs and found that as usual the education system is excellent. My kids were a bit jealous. Did they bring back the shops for those who are not college bound?
Recreation has definately improved. They have an awesome pool with a slide. New ice skating rink and other stuff.
I don't see how they have enough chores to keep the kids busy and teach them a good work ethic. Aside from that, the atmosphere at the school seems to have improved.

Well actually I agree with 2 out of the 3 things you listed and obviously it's not the girls enrollment.
If I remember correctly Hershey Foods is no longer an American owned company...Reese's peanut butter cups are being outsourced to Mexico. Sorry couldn't think of a 3rd example to round off that sentence.
Homecoming formerly known as Alumni Weekend is this weekend...you should go and reconnect with your old classmates.
To dudeandbabydoll:
I was impressed by your post. I graduated in 69, and after 40+ years, I can honestly say that time definitely alters one's perspective. I came to MHS in 63, and things were pretty rough since. I agree that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Even though I thought that most houseparents were a***oles, most had our best interests at heart. I learned the value of hard work. Back then we actually had barn work to do. This brings me to a new point. I believe 3 events have caused the school to go to h**l in a handbasket. Number 1 was closing the barns to student work, 2 was closing the vocational shops because not everyone was college material. Number 3 (politically incorrect) was allowing girls to enroll, which apparently has led to disciplinary problems.
That's my rant for the day.

I love the new megaphone! It makes those of us with Varsity status feel special...tee hee
