Just thought of the health center. What are your best and worst memories of being there?
I loved Ms. Wirley(sp?) She was so much fun. I remember her bringing us extra snacks at night. I really liked the game closet. I made a lot of yarn pot holders. Worst thing I remember is they would ask the question...Did you have a bowl movement? I was dumb enough to say no. Do you know what comes next? Prune Juice!!!! It would make you gag. They would watch you to make sure you actually drank it.

health center adventures

i myself spent a overnight in the health center for a possible conncussion for observation. the part that bugged me is everyhour they woke me up to give a sleeping pill.
I can guess some of the people here were up for homecoming last year. if you happened to see a
large crane in the area of the health center. the school is increasing the size by more than double and should be completely done by the start of next school year

My only time

I went the Health Center, I believe it was my senior year. Well I was in a car accident with Bridget Savage and Penny Massey. We got t-boned. We all were out with Bridget that day, and we were on our way to pick up Brigets' mom at a wedding reception. Well, wouldn't you know, where the accident occured was just acrossed the street from the reception. I remember seeing people come from the reception hall, running, but that is about it. Then I remember my housefather, Mr "V", picking us up, and then we were transported to the health clinic. Man, they woke us up all freaking night to drink water...ugh! I felt bad, because Penny got the worst of it, she was on the passenger side of the car, and that is where we were t-boned. I think we all were in the health clinic for two days.

What a memory!

umm

I only have had to go to the hc once and that was enough! they don't treat ppl who have to be there for "dental" reasons very nice compared to others... i was there for my wisdom teeth and by the last day i was ready to go!! i was swollen and my sister came to get me...it was bad cause though it was nice outside i couldn't take off my hood because i bruises around my throat and some on my jaw. i went to take it off once and some little old couple looked at my sister like she had done it. i looked seriously abused!! the funny thing was the brusises on my throat seriously looked some one was trying to choke me

I spent a fair amount of time there

I've suffered my whole life with badddddddd migraines (now under control with daily meds) and spent many days in the health center with the old hags. Only one silver/white haired lady was nice.

One time when I was in there they brought a Jr. div. kid in there that had half of his cheek ripped off by a German Sheppard that belonged to the house parents. the skin was completely gone, all you could see was his teeth. Any one know how this poor kid turned out?

While I was in the Milt, I was there a few different times. Most of the time it was because I had tonsilitis...and you all know where the Penicillin shots went right? Oh that was the worst! Shots in the butt, geez, with modern medicine they shouldn't have had to do that! The one other time was when I sprained my ankle, and of course my student home was going to Camp Milton, so I had to go to the health center. Fortunately for me there were some pretty cool people in there at the same time so it was actually a fun time to be there.

3 weeks

I spent 3 week in the old Hershey hospital in my Jr year. I wrestled a kid from Lower Dauphin and beat him then I walked of the mat and collapsed. I woke up 2 days later at the hospital with I V's coming out both arms. I got the chicken pox ( not good at 17 ) and b/c I lost 40 lbs between wrestling and football in one week it weakened my immune system. I got sepsis of the blood and it killed all my white cells. I was a mess. They thought I was going to die. The nurses were really hot and very nice. That gave me the will to live. LOL Their massages were really appreciated too. Cool

health center was my second student home...

enrolled in 6-74 and in the first year was there because of six stitches to the head - charlie wooder threw a rock at me for not moving, doc Bakenstone (sp) was the school doc back then.

once a year every may or june from 2 grade to 11th was there because of pision ivy (some not so bad others bad enough that they were talking about cutting my eyes open - seams like thats the only place i would get it). during those stays i got to meet some of the students i knew by name only - on one of these stays (6th grade) i met Mike Krimmel (sp) he was in because of an operation and had stitches and while rooming with him (on the girls side, the boys side was filled up) i did a swan dive over two of the beds with him in one and someone named tom (freshman) at that time, in the other. it just to get away from a girl (why she was chasing me i don't remember) - ended up hiting the heating radiator so hard it almost knocked me out cold - mike laughed so hard he had to have the nurse check his stitches and he had torn them. - they put me in a room by my self after that one,... and i wasn't allowed to leave the room for any reason..... with out a nurse holding my hand... even to go to the bathroom.... i really enflamed that girl to no end....

Mrs. Cook was the best nurse out of all of them (well she liked me the best of them), and then there was the strickest (army nurse) can't for the life of me remember her name (but i really hated to see her come on shift)...

when i was there, they had

when i was there, they had 'coordinated clothing' that they had to wear to school... basically a polo shirt and khakis... we had personal stuff that we could wear to events and to the mall, the park, etc. but i know a lot of stuff has changed recently so i dont know what it's like now clothing-wise.

Do they still let the milts have "none school issued" clothes? I remember we could exchange clothes IF we got them approved first.

I never really spent any

I never really spent any significant time in the Health Center. Only time really was when I got my wisdom teeth out my junior year. That was cake.
I did end up really bandaged up though one time... I rollerbladed a lot when i was in high school. I dont know if they had the paths back then like they do now, but i was over by the ice rink and took the turn where the path crosses the road a little too fast and there was gravel on the path from winter when they put it down to melt snow (this was barely the end of february) and i slid sideways, tore up my none school issued pants and tore half the skin off my leg. i had all kinds of gravel and dirt imbedded in my leg. it was really nasty. my housemom had to bring me pants to wear and when she saw my other ones werent school issued, she flipped. also, the only kid that stopped to help me get to medical was late to school and got in trouble. i talked to mr storm and got him out of trouble, explained what happened. i still have a scar on my leg from that one.

In my time we went to

Hershey hospital. My senior year of wrestling took me down. I played football at 195lbs and wrestled at 154lbs. I stayed in a rubber suit for 7 days only drinking a little water and eating only oranges to get down to weight. Please don't try this at home.Sick I won my wrestle off and started the season wrestling at 154 against State College. I walked on the mat and won the match and then passed out and woke up 3 days later in the hospital. I had no resistance to disease, as I wrecked my body and got Chicken Pox's. That caused me to have sepsis of the blood. I stayed there for 10 more days. The food was great for a hospital and I feel in love with like 3 nurses (no girls at MHS at this time). I missed my whole junior year of wrestling as well as my senior year too. Crying In my junior year I was in a wrestle off for the rite to wrestle in the first meet and did a great fireman's carry in my match. The only trouble was I separated my sternum and missed the whole junior year season.

Reminds Me

I remember going to the health center with poison oak. I had to go there because my student home was going to camp milton. Anyway, Matt Testerman and I were sitting on the little island between Cloverdale's and Gro-mor's fields. Needless to say we sat in the poison oak. Didn't know what it was till I got it on my arm. Matt on the other hand got it on his "you know what".

A Few Memorable...

My first time in the Health Center was when a rash of the flu went through Jefferson in middle school four of us ended up there. Was great, except the 3 am wake up call by Mrs. Mulligan to give us a sleeping pill never understood this one! LOL The Saturday morning of a 4 day stay we got a full breakfast fed to us by the cook at the time (a younger woman whom I forget her name) I understand she was sent to the Central Kitchen after that.

Halloween 1984 and the pumpkin slicing incident which gave me 2 butterfly stiches.

1988 was a BIG Health Center year for me.

1st - Was the summer and was at Union. Brian Skeen decided to flip the riding lawn mower into the creek at the bottom of the embankment in front of the unit. Those of us who stayed home from Rec had to go fishing for it as Mr. Wortman pulled the tractor to pull it back out. We got in the creek, right sided it the problem climbing back up the embankment.

Needless to say 4 of us got severe poison ivy on our hands and body parts leading us to goto the Health Center. Three days of comfort (and the 2nd to last time I've had poison ivy) but never got why Mrs. Worley's bowl movements were asked seeing I had poison ivy not an internal situation.

2nd - I decided to be REALLY smart and have a hand wrestling match with the windmill printing press at Senior Hall in Print Shop. I am not alone in the Heidelberg Press eating a student (Lea Jetter was another). I was there overnight for observation due to the loss of blood etc. Ate like a KING! All I did was 1/2 take off my middle left finger which kinda rocked for a guy my age, it was in a splint and almost got Ds multiple times for giving everyone the finger. Pain in the derriere was I'm left handed. GRRR

Last time was my Senior Year to remove my wisdom teeth. Being on the Dental side was a whole different experience. Since my teeth were not infected nor impacted the post-surgery was rather painless and was released after 2 days. I did pity my friend and roommate in this situation Deanna Bradley '91 b/c she took her pain as well as mine.

Mrs. Worley sweetheart grandmotherly.
Mrs. Mulligan I still have images of in my nightmares that woman could be scary.
Mrs. Aungst talk about Nurse Ratched but I'm sure she wasn't that bad of a person.

Skateboarding down the hill by Greenfields...

Had to be the dumbest idea on that boring summer day! I wasn't much of a skateboarder, but was okay. I thought I could make it all the way down the hill, but little did I know the blacktop on the outskirts of the road were a little rocky. The loose pebbles from the blacktop ate me up! I put my hands down and my one hand had nothing but pebbles embedded into it. Nasty fall.. OUCH!!!

That was my only memorable trip and not a good one!

Thanks for the painful memories.... LOL.
