I found him to be a really nice guy - totally rational and not one who would engage in head slamming (his own, not others who might deserve it! "Drinking the Kool-Aid"

ClintMurphy90 wrote:
Is there something wrong with the kool-aid?

That'll teach me to use a cliche that isn't well known!

For those of you too young to remember (and for those of you smart enough to have forgotten), in the 1970's a charismatic preacher by the name of Jim Jones formed "The People's Temple." He and around 900 followers moved to Guyana to escape suspicions of wrongdoing. After a visit by a US. Congressman (Leo Ryan), the entire community committed mass suicide, most by drinking kool-aid laced with cyanide and a number of sedatives.

From this horrible tragedy, the phrase "drinking the kool-aid" evolved to mean "buying into the rhetoric without thinking about the consequences." The phrase has lost it's ties to the original tragedy -- which is why it can be used now in a humorous way.

And now that I've explained it, it isn't really that funny anymore.

Responses to many...

Clay,

I read through your posts and besides the valid point about Macs not playing nice on networks it seems your focus on Windoze is more focused on the financial security supporting those piece of crap machines provides you more than anything else. Further, you're obviously roped into the illusion that Microsoft runs an "open" platform. Microsoft is the biggest LOCK-IN company in the history of technology. Argue what you may that you can swap hardware, lots of software, etc. but at the end of the day your tied to Microsofts closed protocols and integrated (i.e.: Internet Explorer amongst others) software that prevents a large numbers of potential competitors from excelling in their particular areas. This is exactly why the company was almost broken up a few years ago as a result of the DOJ lawsuits and why they were just fined millions of dollars and forced to produce a stripped down, "clean" version of their OS in Europe. Even further, their now being forced to open all their protocols to competitors in Europe which is something that should be happening here in the US as well. Time will tell. Bottom line is that Microsoft made a great decision by making the OS available to manufactuers many moons ago but what they've done with it since that time is what makes them a hated monopoly now.

ClintMurphy90 wrote:

Clint, the reason it never happened is that, as Clay pointed out earlier, Macs ran on a different processor than PCs up until 2 years ago. Now they both run on Intel chipsets and there are already Dell and other systems now that can run OS X. The problem is that Apple doesn't license the OS to any other manufacturers, and they won't in the near future. Honestly, despite Clays take on Apple going the "proprietary" route, I like it like this. I like having one company focused on both the hardware and software. It has obviously made things much easier on the consumer and lends to a much better experience and support model as well.

Don Chappell wrote:

Don, It's the time and care they take to make things work right, the time they take to make sure the user experience is perfected, that separates OS X and Windows. As far as the small market share is concerned, Apple really doesn't care about it at this point. If you took a step back and focused on their Market Capitalization you'll see that as of right now, even with their small market share, Apple has surpassed both IBM and Intel and is just behind, ironically, Microsoft.

UNC ... Not a problem ...

nobody is perfect even the Appleheads! I own IBM compatible stuff and do not understand computers enough to know better! I'm happy with my stuff and feel quite satisfied that I can send an email to somebody let alone design a program. I started on the path [design] many years ago, but decided it wasn't enjoyable enough for me to really sell myself to that type of work [Cobol, Fortran]. Or maybe I was just too stupid!

But I have several friends and family members who can sit down and just pour their souls into that type of work. I have the highest level of respect for that element of our society, because they allow me to stumble through different programs and look quasi-intelligent when I prepare presentations and/or run statistical analyses on projects.

The younger generation seems to be able to write, dissect and manipulate even the most complex programs in short time, however I am still in awe of the folks who truly did invent the internet [not Al Gore] and also those folks who created the 80 card column format that is used in the government for many programs.

In an effort to move away from that ancient supply transaction technology and into the new world [ERP] in many cases the ERP teams are finding it quite difficult to duplicate certain functions within the federal supply system using our most modern technology. The entire ERP project has been slipping to the right due to this inability to replace the old technolgy with new modules that retain the same capability to perform certain transactions for tracking material movement, recording financial transactions and storing various types of technical records effectively.

Bill and Clay, thank you for your dedication for making the lives of people like myself easy. Even the worst programmer is way ahead of me and provides me with the capability to perform functions that would otherwise just be too difficult or cumbersome to engage.

You poor soul. Bill Gates tucks me in an night. I actually started out as a Unix guy and I still have to dabble in it, because we build thin clients for the military. Things have been much greener since I moved to the dark side.

Linux is frustrating and sometimes it's like getting a time machine and being able to make stops in 1995 and 1985. And lets not get into it's shortcomings in regards to centralized security management. Then again maybe 2008 will be the year that Linux takes over, of course every year has been that year since RedHat was in diapers.

Let's not hate on Microsoft, because the people in the know realize that there can be only one. People using the other OS's are analogous to libertarians at election time.

I work in a Linux shop. The common MSJoke around here is that Microsoft's success is based on their quality assurance staff. Now THERE'S a bunch of people who obviously love their jobs! THEY pay MICROSOFT for the privilege of debugging their software! And there's MILLIONS of them, all over the world!

It's a matter of market share...

and Mac [small market share of total HW] has figured out that if they want people to buy their HW, they have to make sure the most popular OS[i.e. - largest market share]stuff is compatible with their machines. On the other hand those who buy the non-Mac machines own the largest percentage of HW and could give a rat's patooty about whether people who want to buy MacOSs can interface with their HW.

I work with a bunch of engineers and almost to the person the engineering community prefers Mac over IBM compatible but the Microsoft folks [Gates] know how to market. They introduce a product and then flood the market, then they figures out the problems and supply patches.

On the other hand Apple/Mac folks wait until they master the product and then distribute a much better product, one that is much more user friendly but the market place has already been saturated with IBM compatible OS stuff.

Appartently they must appreciate their portion of the market place, because they haven't changed marketing strategies yet.

It is the year 2007 and Apple® has a program that lets you install Winblows on your Mac (Boot Camp)and have a dual boot computer.

argue about the fact that MacOS is superior in a number of areas. However I take issue with companies that love to go the proprietary route. Sony is a prime example, because they have tried and failed at it a number of times. First it was Beta and then it was the MiniDisc. The jury is still out on Blu-Ray, so Sony may have finally done it.

Let's get back to Apple and their proprietary stupidity. If they would have ported MacOS to the x86 architecture 15 years ago and focused on selling their software they would have stomped all over Microsoft. Now 15 years hence they are using x86 based hardware in their units. I'm sorry but Apple as a whole looks pretty foolish in my eyes.

Beyond that Macs haven't been targeted as an operating system worth hacking. If they were I'm sure that holes galore would be found. Plus Macs don't function well in a secured network. I get really anxious when I think about Macs on my network. They have limited acceptance and that part of the OS hasn't been fleshed out. Of course if they would have focused on their OS as a money maker 15 years ago it would be a different story.

I actually haven't touched a MAC since the early Apple machine where you had to put the disk in and then type 'hello'. I guess I just went a different direction since most people went the DOS, etc. route. My first computer was a TI-99/4A which was really a nifty little machine, but TI shot itself in the heart because they wanted to control EVERYTHING!
I wouldn't mind owning a MAC, but don't know when/if that will happen, since I currently have a Gateway machine running XP. I'm happy with that and probably don't know what I may be missing on the MAC?

But I hate Vista. At my current place of employment they purchased a PC for the same price as my bro had paid for his Mac Laptop and it is 2 years old and I still love it. The only time I have to restart it is when I install an update. I never get the blue screen of death. Smiling In my personal opinion it isn't the brand but the price that makes it sufficient or insufficient. Evil
