Pennsylvania Handheld Cell Phone Ban

11/10/2008 - 4:55pm

It is no longer at the discretion of your local municipality, it will now be State Law! You might want to familiarize yourself with it before it takes affect. They will be enforcing it!

NY has had this since what seems like forever or at least they fell in line right after CA ban cell phones on the highways.

BUT even after the ban was set and "enforced" an off duty police officer while txting his girlfriend ran over 2 middle aged ladies at a cross walk. AND I have to say not too many are pulled over for "cell phone use"

Got me a blue tooth and now I can be beamed to anyplace USA and beyond. Hitchhiker

I have seen folks driving and talking to someone IN the car that are scarier than someone on a phone....

The latest that I have seen is that there is NO difference in safety between hands free and holding on to a phone. The main issue is that the driver is still distracted by the call and hands or no hands does not make a difference - the call is the issue. The politician and safety folks know this, and have for a while. IF they were REALLY interested in safety they would outlaw any phone use in cars, but like most politician they don't have the guts to do what is right. The people would ignore any law banning phone use in the car, making the law a mockery.

Well, it was slightly scary but funny after. My roomie Sharon was driving home from work on Monday and she had to swerve in an intersection to miss ~ get this ~ some moron here in the burbs not only eating BUT eating a KFC Bucket WITH UTENSILS!

Dude just blew through a red light thankfully she was 3/4 of the way out of the intersection and gunned it but c'mon.

Now, I have done I think all of the above except the DVD. Applied make-up during the Rocky Horror days, ate with AND without utensils, I love people watching (I'm a fashion nightmare so seeing who ranks worse than me is hilarity ensuing) and had my first accident in high school head banging to Def Leppard or someone. (Nice ole hit and run summer of '89 LOL) So, pointing the finger back here as well.

Heidera,

The Bill/Amendment is sitting with the Committee, and has been. Committee starts sessions again next week.

And if you didn't read the entire thread....I did post that it was posted premature, as it is STILL PENDING!

Okay, so I do drink in the vehicle, but usually DO NOT eat while driving!
Can't watch the DVD, our vehicle has some sort of safety feature that it only plays it through the screen in the back seat, however, the sound can be played throughout the cab.
Okay, I MAY be a culprit of "people watching" when it is warranted.......(Bill....I don't want to hear anything about the men playing football and almost crashing into my sisters neighbors house....I just admitted that I MAY be a culprit!!!!) LOL
And while I do listen to music, I don't have to take my eyes off the road to change the station or the volume as the controls are at my fingertips!!!!!

Folks there is nothing about this on the Pennsylvania Demartment of Transportation Website. Even under they're press releases. I admire the "poster" of this, but obviously they were misinformed.

There was a scam like this earlier this year.

It says "hand free"...but the fact that people will still be driving around talking "into the air", eating, putting on make-up, checking out the opposite sex, playing the radio, hollerin' at the kids, and any other distraction that comes with driving, doesn't make me feel any safer on the roads.

By the way, of the above listed things that I mentioned, I no longer do any of them. What?

Ok the picture of you driving a Dodge Ram, scares me.....Smiling

all kidding aside, Calif. has banned all use of cell phones in the car for the driver. you must be using one form of handsfree to use your phone (ie. bluetooth, corded).

1st fine. $20 with taxes and administrative cost it will be approximatly $70.
2nd fine $50
3rd fine $150
I don't know what's above that.

so there you go. It will be interesting to see what stats the CHP release after it's been active for a while.

I like to drive fast yet defensively (yes there is such a style) on open roads, usually 20 over the speed limit, but stick to within 5 mph of the limit in residential areas. The thing that annoys me most (besides the people on cell phones, reading, etc.) are the TAILGATERS! Apparently the two-second rule doesn't apply anymore, there have been so many times I'm doing 80 mph and the car behind me is so close that I can't even see their hood. I drive a 2001 Dakota Sport, so it's not like I'm in a huge vehicle. But even stopped they are right up my tail, so if I'm stopped uphill I have to pray that I don't coast back on them before going forward (but I'd still take my 5-spd over auto transmission anyday). Think it's my bumper sticker that makes them do it? It says:

Bumper to bumper
Butt to butt
Get off my a$$
You crazy nut

Along the same lines are the drivers that change lanes 3 FEET in front of me. But I'd better stop for now, I could stay on this soapbox for way too long.

I couldnt agree with you more. I think the way you drive definately shows your personality! If your fast and you speed and your agressive your probably like that in real life if your quiet and considerate you will probably be that way behind the wheel as well. Good point!

The way people drive, I think, reflects their personality. Some people believe they are entitled to everything and some people are kind and courteous and they drive exactly how they live their lives.

I think bans should be statewide because lots of small towns don't actually advertise that they have a ban and people "just driving through" are usually not aware of the ban until they are ticketed. It can be used unfairly, for sure.

Miscellaneous nattering:
I drive a Dodge Dakota Standard V-8 and love it. My V-8 is my stress reliever. It could be the years of riding in the truck with mom, but I need more power. :) I would love to trick it out James Bond style. I would love the flipping license plate, the oil sprayer, I could go on. But hey, dreaming about this stuff helps me when I'm on the road. People down here are crappy drivers. Turn signal, say what! Pull out into on-coming traffic at 5 MPH, oh, yeah!

have bans, but it is not statewide as of yet. Which is a pain in the derriere . It means you have to know which municipality has banned them and which hasn't, unless you are spoiled like me and ride in the "lap of luxury" (the name of my truck) which has bluetooth!!!! Hey, I like the idea of flame throwers on the truck!!!! My pretty blue pearl, lap of luxury with flame throwers!!!!! What a hoot!!!!! LOL

Handhelds are banned in DC but not in MD or VA and so people are always on the phone in DC, even the DC cops while driving. When it was first enacted the cops were enforcing it, mainly pulling over the cabbies but now it's back to the same old, same old everybody is still on the phone.

What I think is worse are the people reading NOVELS!! and driving! Holding it on the steering wheel and driving! I've seen that twice. I routinely see people with the newspaper propped up on the wheel, not paying attention to the road in the crawling traffic. Texting is also a big thing on the road down here. Hey that person is swerving and you ask have they been drinking? No, they're texting. And finally, ladies applying makeup and driving. That mascara can wait until you park Toots!
Sorry. I like this new soapbox thing.
;)

And for some reason my boyfriend still refuses to put a flame thrower on my truck. I don't know why.
