SuperGirl Has Spoken

I've recently been doing allot of soul searching as well as carefully observing the environment in which we all live. To be quite honest, the current state of mankind terrifies me. I feel we have all become isolated from each other in way that is so illusive most of us can't even recognize the parameters of our own prison cell. It has crept in so quietly, under such a veil of innocence that we actually believe we are more "in touch" with the rest of the world now than ever, when in fact we have become islands unto ourselves. And I believe the sense of "self" we have come to accept will be our own undoing.

In 2009 we have more technological devices geared towards communication than I can count, and yet most of us barely communicate with the people right in earshot of us. I don't necessarily blame technology for the divisions we have drawn. I do however believe we use modern communication technology for what we as humans have grown very accustomed to doing, clouding pertinent issues with distractions. We sit day after day searching the Internet for the latest cause to support, as long as it's subject matter has nothing to do with the world that's falling apart right in front of us.

How can we free Tibet, stop animal cruelty, convince everyone that "Our" diet is the best diet, secure the safety of every tree, keep close tabs on ice cubes that might be on Mars and throw the Illuminati from the walls, when we can't even muster up the courage and common courtesy to say good morning to the guy fixin' his coffee next to us at the local Kwik-Stop? And what's worse is many of us can't even engage in a real conversation with the one we've chosen to spend the rest of our lives with. I'm not saying this is everyone's reality, but it certainly appears to be rapidly becoming the norm for most American families.

I can't speak for those abroad because I don't live there. I am fortunate enough to be in a relationship where anything and everything is discussed in an open forum on a daily basis. We have a priority list of sorts. First we clean up the garden within ourselves, and then, if there's still time, we'll help the neighbors with their yard. Judging from what I've observed of those I know in person, and the stories I hear regarding a sense of loneliness and lack of purpose within what was supposed to be healthy families, I'm assuming there is most definitely a massive communication breakdown running wild, despite all the glorified walkie-talkies we rely so much upon to keep us in touch with each other.

In summery, my point is this. We as a people need to take a breath. We need to stop focusing on issues that we'd like to change, and start focusing on issues we need to change. World peace begins with personal salvation.

Until we can, as Gandhi said, become the change we want to see in the world, we have no business in the affairs of others. I don't claim to be perfect, far from it in fact. But I'm workin' on it every day. It just seems to me that everyone is more interested in saving the world than saving themselves these days....and if we can't keep our own selves from drowning, if we can't get our own being in order, what consequences might the world suffer at our so called "healing hands".

It all starts at home my phriends. I can almost guarantee that there are people that you truly love with all your heart, that you have far from described the magnitude of their importance to you.

A good first step towards making this world a better place would be putting down your I-Phone and your causes long enough to make a difference in the person right next to you.
