The Times They ARE A-Changin'
No doubt about it: Today's MHS kids bear little resemblance to those of even a generation or two ago.
Want proof? Just look at what our alumni president says in his annual report: "The students are needier -- 50 % of the group just enrolled have had some impact or some relationship with children and youth [I assume that refers to a social agency with the same name] in their home community -- about 40 % of those children have been in five or more schools before coming to MHS -- about 50 % have had exposure to drug and alcohol abuse within their past."
But hey! Like it or not, the same sea change is evident within the rest of American society. Look at the student population in local school districts -- especially the burgeoning enrollment in alternative schools for those with serious behavioral problems. Take a hard look at the kids down the block. At those in your immediate family.
Through it all, one basic fact remains steady: Kids are kids. That ALL need the security that comes with being part of a loving family.
Our alma mater doesn't always fulfill that need. (No institution does. Nor can.) But it tries. And, as often as not, it succeeds in many of the ways that count most.
